Bangladesh will host the next edition of the Asia Cup: Bangladesh set to host Asia Cup 2016 for the third consecutive time. The tournament will kick-start on 24th February and will continue till 6th March, a week before the ICC World T20 in India.

Interestingly, the tournament is set to be played in the T20 format for the first time. The upcoming T20 event might be the factor behind this decision as players will get a bit of practice for the shortest format just before the ICC event.

This will be a five-nation tournament. Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and an associate nation are set to join.

It was Pakistan’s proposal that Bangladesh should host the next edition of the Asia Cup and BCB agreed on it. Earlier Bangladesh hosted the tournament in 2014, 2012, 1988. This will the 16th edition of the Asia Cup.

The qualifying tournament to be held in the UAE in November will see the hosts, Oman, Afghanistan and Hong Kong will fight for one spot in the main tournament.

After the Australia series in Bangladesh was scrapped due to some threating that militants may attack Western interests.

Bangladesh is denying the IS presence in the country and is desperate to avoid the fate of Pakistan which has had to host all of its home matches at neutral venues since a few gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan players in a bus during a 2009 Test match in Lahore.
