Former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir was surprised at Delhi Capitals buying Steve Smith for 2.20 crores at the IPL 2021 auction. Delhi batting line-up is well settled with Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant forming the core and hence Gambhir has questioned the selection choice of the franchise. Earlier Smith was released Rajasthan Royals in the retention window. The former Australian skipper led the Royals in the last edition of the IPL where they finished last.

Speaking to Ster Sports on Steve Smith’s selection Gautam Gambhir said that Delhi capitals never needed a player like Steve Smith in their ranks. He said that their batting lineup is sorted with players having defined roles and it would be difficult to fit in Smith. Gambhir admitted that Smith isn’t the kind of player that he thought the Capitals would be interested in but his price is what makes this a fine deal.

DC Bought Steve Smith At Very Cheap Price: Gautam Gambhir

“Only good thing is that they bought these players at a very cheap price. Had they bought Steve Smith at a very high price, I wouldn’t be very happy with it. Most of these players are steal buys especially Umesh Yadav, Steve Smith, Sam Billings. From that point of view they did a very good job but I actually never thought that they would go for someone like Steve Smith. They never needed someone like Steve Smith,” Gambhir said.

The former Indian cricketer also gave a proper description of the side’s batting lineup for the upcoming season.

“Shimron Hetmyer probably will play in the middle order. They have got Shikhar Dhawan who is in very good form. They have got Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant plus they will definitely play Hetmyer and Marcus Stoinis. Anrich Nortje and Rabada did really well for them,” Gautam Gambhir told Star Sports.

Delhi Capitals played their first-ever IPL final last season. However, they lost to Mumbai Indians in the final who went onto lift their fifth IPL title.
