Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli centuries help team India to dominate Sri Lanka on the first day of the third test match at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi. After winning the toss, Virat Kohli batted first. India lost Dhawan and Pujara in the first session. Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay played with positive intent. Before the close of play, India lost Vijay and Rahane.

Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay got the team off to positive start adding 42 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan was caught by Lakmal off Dilwruan Perera. After that Pujara and Vijay looked solid. Pujara was caught by Sadeera for 23. Vijay looked solid. Virat Kohli came to the crease with positive intent. Vijay completed his half-century in 67 balls.  At the end of the first session, India scored 116 runs in 27 overs.

The second session saw both batsmen dominate Sri Lanka lackluster bowling. Indian captain Kohli completed his half-century in 52 balls. They put the bad balls away for boundaries. Vijay completed his century in 163 balls. It was great batting display by both Indian batsmen. India went into the tea break at 245 for 2.

Soon after the tea break, Indian captain Virat Kohli completed his 20th century in test cricket off 110 balls. Both batsmen continued to dominate the Sri Lankan bowling. Vijay completed his 150 off 251 balls. Sandkan dismissed Murali Vijay for 155 ending a brilliant 283 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. After that Sandkan dismissed Rahane for 1. Virat Kohli continued his form scoring his 150 in 178 balls. India ended the day on 371 for 4 in allotted 90 overs.

Gamage, Perera picked 1 wicket each while Sandkan took 2 wickets giving away 110 runs.
