Ishant Sharma, who missed the opening game for Delhi Capitals against Kings XI Punjab, is set to miss a couple more as per an ANI report. The veteran Indian pacer picked up a back spasm in the practice session before Delhi’s first game and hasn’t recovered as yet.

Speaking to ANI, a Delhi Capitals official said the management wouldn’t like to risk bringing in Ishant for the next game.

“He will ideally need a little time and may miss a game or two. We will not risk Ishant and rush him into the XI so early in the season. The games have only begun and he is a vital cog going into the middle and business end of the tournament,” the DC staff member said.

The DC official further asserted that the injury was not a result of due to the practice sessions after the COVID-19 break.

“It has nothing to do with returning to training after the pandemic-induced break. He had been training constantly during the break so that is not the case” he explained.

Ishant Sharma’s long-standing injury will give selection headaches to the Delhi Capitals management. The squad is built with young bowlers and Ishant’s absence will push back the franchise big time. Delhi Capitals’ other potential like-for-like replacements for Ishant from the existing squad include Harshal Patel, Mohit Sharma and Avesh Khan.

Delhi Capitals under Shreyas Iyer reached the semi-finals of IPL 2019 and Ishant Sharma picked up 13 wickets for the franchise last year.
