India”s Ajinkya Rahane became the first fielder in Test history to take eight catches in a match, achieving the feat in the first Test match against Sri Lanka last summer in Galle. He took three in the first innings and five in the second to register the record for most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in a single Test match.

Five fielders have taken exactly seven catches in a Test- Greg Chappell of Australia, Yajurvindra Singh of India, Stephen Fleming of New Zealand, Matthew Hayden of Australia and Hashan Tillakaratne of Sri Lanka.

In the first innings, the 27-year-old Mumbai lad grabbed the catches of Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal. While in the second innings, Dhammika Prasad, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jehan Mubarak and Rangana Herath were his victims.

India was in strong position in the whole Test match except the fourth and final day which saw the Men in Blue collapse and they were all-out for a mere 112 while chasing 176. Thus unexpectedly, they lost the Test match by 63 runs.
