The 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup is expected to be staged between February 7 and March 8. The event will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka and feature 20 participating teams. Matches are likely to be held across at least five venues in India and two in Sri Lanka. The final could take place in either Ahmedabad or Colombo, depending on Pakistan’s involvement.
Currently, India and Pakistan do not play in each other’s countries due to political tensions between the two governments. While the ICC has yet to confirm the official schedule, ESPNcricinfo understands that the window has been fixed and conveyed to the competing teams.
A total of 15 teams have already secured their spots for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup: India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, USA, West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands, and Italy, who will be making their first-ever World Cup appearance.
The remaining five places will be decided through qualifiers, with two teams coming from the Africa region and three from the Asia and East Asia Pacific pathway. The tournament will follow the same structure as the 2024 edition held in the West Indies and USA.
2026 T20 World Cup Keeps Same Format As 2024
Twenty teams will be split into four groups of five, with the top two sides from each group advancing to the Super Eight stage. The eight teams will then be divided into two groups of four, from which the top two in each group will progress to the semi-finals. India are the defending champions, having defeated South Africa in the final at Barbados in 2024.
That edition featured 55 matches in total. India’s cricket calendar in early 2026 is packed with major tournaments. It begins with the Women’s Premier League (WPL), for which dates are yet to be announced, though the BCCI has earmarked a window from early January to early February for the five-team competition.
The WPL will be followed by the Men’s T20 World Cup, after which the IPL is expected to run from March 15 to May 31. In addition, India will host New Zealand for an ODI and T20I series between January 11 and 31.
