Prithvi Shaw has been known for his special talent from his school days era. He showed tremendous skills and potential in the early days. The explosive right-handed batter played so far 5 Test, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I match. He was included in the squad against Sri Lanka for the T20I series but did not feature in the playing XI.
Shaw scored a Test century on his debut against West Indies in 2018 and joined the elite list of batters to do so. Due to injuries and disciplinary issues, he has not been able to establish a place in the Indian team across all formats. He has been involved in many controversies since 2019.
Shaw registered the second-highest individual score of 379 runs in the Ranji Trophy match against Assam during the 2022/23 Ranji Trophy season.
Here we look at 3 biggest controversies in Prithvi Shaw’s career so far:
Selfie Controversy
Shaw was involved in a selfie controversy with a model in Mumbai. He went for dinner with his friends in a five-star hotel in Santacruz when the unknown arrived and asked on taking a selfie. He took selfies with two people before the same group returned and demanded additional selfies.
The young Indian cricketer declined that he had come with his friends before Ashish Surendra made a complaint to the manager of the hotel over phone. It left the accused furious who were asked to leave the hotel. Several people were there outside the hotel holding baseball bats when Shaw and his friend left the building. The accused smashed the rear and front of Shaw’s friend BMW using baseball bats.
8 people were booked for attacking Shaw and his friends. The Mumbai Police have arrested Sapna Gill for hitting Shaw’s car. She alleged that Shaw was carrying a stick in his hand and his friends attacked women.
Cough Syrup controversy
Shaw was involved in the cough syrup controversy when BCCI anti-doping testing procedure took place on 22 February 2019 in Indore during the Syed Mushtaq Ali match. After examination, terbutaline was discovered in the Shaw sample.
Due to a doping offence during the 2018-19 season, Shaw was suspended until 15 November 2019. He allegedly accidentally took a prohibited drug in the cough syrups which led the cricketer to miss the first half of the Indian season. The BCCI slapped down an 8-month ban from all forms of competitive cricket for failing dope tests.
It was disappointing from Shaw’s point of view as he has been struggling with injuries and fitness after a brilliant Test debut.
Failing YO-YO Test
Before the 2022 Indian Premier League, Prithvi Shaw failed the YO- YO Test at National Cricket Academy, Bangalore according to PTI.
It is a mandatory test for all contracted players before the IPL whether they are fit enough. He played three back-to-back matches for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy. Shaw struggled with fitness and looked fatigued.
He was there with Delhi Capitals during the 2022 auction and visited the NCA for giving an update on his health even though he is not under central contract. The fitness mark is 16.5 for men but Shaw received a PTI score of less than 15.
