As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced its 15-player squad for the tournament, scheduled from February 19 to March 9. The PCB has until February 11 to make any changes to the squad; thereafter, replacements will only be permitted on medical grounds, subject to approval by the ICC Event Technical Committee.
Given the dynamic nature of cricket and the possibility of injuries or strategic adjustments, there remains a window for in-form players to make a last-minute entry into the squad. Here are three standout performers who could be considered:
1. Saim Ayub: The Emerging Batting Sensation
Saim Ayub has been making waves in domestic cricket with his consistent performances. Despite being named in the ODI squad for the series against South Africa in December 2024, he was not included in the Champions Trophy squad announced on January 31, 2025.
His exclusion was primarily due to fitness concerns, with reports indicating he was still “at least four weeks” away from being fully fit. However, if he regains full fitness before the February 11 deadline, his recent form and ability to anchor the innings could make him a valuable addition to Pakistan’s top order.
2. Mohammad Abbas: The Experienced Seamer
Mohammad Abbas, known for his disciplined line and length, has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit. He was included in the Test squad for the South Africa series in December 2024, replacing off-spinner Sajid Khan due to the pace-friendly conditions expected.
While primarily recognized for his Test performances, Abbas’s recent form and experience could provide depth to Pakistan’s pace attack, especially considering the subcontinental conditions where seamers who can exploit reverse swing become crucial.
3. Sufyan Moqim: The Promising Spinner
With the Champions Trophy being co-hosted by Pakistan and the UAE, conditions are expected to favor spinners. Sufyan Moqim, a young left-arm spinner, has showcased his talent in domestic tournaments. He was part of the ODI squad for the South Africa series in December 2024.
Given that Abrar Ahmed is the only specialist spinner in the current Champions Trophy squad, adding another spinner like Moqim could bolster the team’s bowling options, providing variety and depth to tackle opposition batsmen on spin-friendly pitches.
As the deadline approaches, the PCB’s selection committee will be closely monitoring players’ performances and fitness levels. The inclusion of any of these in-form players could enhance Pakistan’s prospects in the Champions Trophy 2025, offering a blend of youth and experience to navigate the challenges of the tournament.
