3 Players Who Could Replace Dean Elgar As South Africa’s Test Opener

Dean Elgar, South Africa’s Test opener, is preparing to conclude his distinguished career. His last Test will be against India at Newlands in Cape Town, commencing on January 3. Elgar will also captain the Proteas in the absence of their regular skipper, Temba Bavuma.

The resilient left-hander showcased his best form in the initial Test, delivering a stunning century that played a pivotal role in South Africa’s memorable victory. Uncharacteristic fluency and style were evident in his exceptional innings of 182.

Elgar, known for his non-fluent drives, surprised by executing a variety of them, maintaining an ominous form. He adopted a proactive approach, not allowing Indian bowlers to settle. Despite being a premier Test opener for a decade, Elgar’s stats might not fully represent his potential.

Elgar’s inconsistency reflects in his average of 38.35, posing a challenge for Proteas to find a replacement. Experienced players and newcomers are vying for the opening position in South Africa.

Three potential candidates to take over as South Africa’s Test opener in place of Dean Elgar:

#1 Sarel Erwee

Erwee, one of the most seasoned openers in South Africa’s first-class scene, stands as a suitable replacement for Dean Elgar at the opening position. Although he hasn’t left a significant mark in his short Test career, his recent form and wealth of experience position him as a contender to succeed Elgar in the upcoming period.

Having debuted in first-class cricket for KwaZulu-Natal in 2008, the 34-year-old has solidified his position at the opening slot. Despite occasional consistency issues, Erwee’s playing style, coupled with his capacity to endure extended periods at the crease, positions him as a feasible choice for a Test opener.

Erwee entered Test cricket in 2022, impressively scoring his maiden century in the second Test. Despite a promising start, his subsequent eight Tests saw a dip in performance, resulting in his exclusion from the team. With Elgar’s retirement, Erwee now has a chance to stage an international comeback.

#2 Tony de Zorzi

Tony de Zorzi emerges as a highly promising option to succeed Dean Elgar, showcasing his talent at the international level. Notably, he secured his maiden ODI century in the series against India and formed a crucial partnership with Dean Elgar in the opening Test at Supersport Park in Centurion.

Despite some vulnerabilities, particularly in Test batting, his positive approach and proficiency in playing quality strokes make him a valuable option. Given the fast-paced nature of modern Test cricket, his batting style could be worth exploring.

De Zorzi initiated his first-class career in 2016, yet it required seven years for him to secure a spot in the national team. The aggressive left-hander, known for his hard-hitting style, also possesses the capability to bat for extended periods, potentially making him a candidate for the opening position in South Africa’s upcoming Test assignment.

#3 Jordan Hermann

Jordan Hermann, a standout young talent in South Africa’s domestic cricket scene, has the potential to emerge as a significant player in the country’s red-ball cricket. As a skillful and poised young batsman, he has already made a mark in the first-class arena.

As Dean Elgar bids farewell, the conclusion of an era prompts South African selectors to consider introducing new, dynamic players and embracing an aggressive style of play. This aligns with the recent emergence of ‘Bazball’.

Debuting for the Titans in 2021, Hermann has quickly established himself in first-class cricket, amassing 1,387 runs in 17 matches with an impressive average of 55.48. The 22-year-old displays remarkable skill against genuine pace and bounce, making him a fitting candidate to fill the void left by Elgar.
