5 Controversial Bar Fight Incidents Involving England Cricketers

England Test captain Ben Stokes has once again landed in controversy shortly after guiding his side to a victory over New Zealand at Lord’s in the opening Test of the three-match series. As per reports, Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were allegedly involved in a nightclub altercation with a rugby player.

According to reports, the duo stayed out beyond the team’s midnight curfew while celebrating the win at Lord’s and later visited Rex Rooms on King’s Road in London. At the same venue, academy rugby players from the Saracens club were reportedly hosting an end-of-season gathering.

Reports further claimed that a rugby player attempted to punch Atkinson but accidentally struck an ECB security official, who later required stitches. The incident has sparked speculation over Ben Stokes’ future, with reports suggesting he could retire, lose the Test captaincy, or face suspension.

Nightclub controversies and bar fights have been part of England cricket’s history for years. With the latest incident involving Stokes and Atkinson making headlines, here’s a look back at some of the most notorious bar brawls involving England cricketers.

#5 Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales were handed hefty fines following a street altercation outside a Bristol nightclub in September 2017, with Stokes also being arrested in connection with the incident. The controversy erupted after England’s ODI victory over the West Indies, when footage surfaced allegedly showing Stokes throwing punches at two individuals.

Stokes was later charged with affray, while both players received backdated suspensions and financial penalties from the Cricket Disciplinary Commission. During the 2018 court case, Stokes’ legal team maintained that he acted in self-defence, and he was eventually cleared of all charges.

#4 Harry Brook

In October 2025, England white-ball skipper Harry Brook was caught in a nightclub controversy during the New Zealand tour. According to reports, the right-handed batter got into an argument with a bouncer in Wellington a day before the third ODI after allegedly being refused entry to a nightclub. The situation reportedly escalated, and Brook was struck by the bouncer during the altercation.

Brook later informed the team’s security staff about the incident himself. After conducting an investigation, the England and Wales Cricket Board fined him £30,000 and issued an official conduct warning. Brook subsequently apologised, stating that he was committed to learning from the mistake and rebuilding trust through his actions both on and off the field.

#3 Ian Botham vs Ian Chappell

One of the most notorious bar fights in cricket history involved legends Ian Botham and Ian Chappell at the Hilton Hotel bar in Melbourne. Over the years, both former captains have shared very different accounts of what happened during the heated confrontation.

According to Botham, Chappell was heavily criticising England cricket, which led to a physical altercation that reportedly saw the Australian knocked over a table and into a group of local footballers.

Chappell, however, claimed that Botham threatened him with a beer glass and shoved him off his chair. The tension between the two reportedly remained for decades, with another confrontation years later in a car park where they had to be pulled apart.

#2 David Warner vs Joe Root

David Warner and Joe Root were involved in a controversial incident after a Champions Trophy match in 2013, although Root was not considered responsible in the matter. Warner punched the England batter at a Walkabout bar in Birmingham, which led to the Australian opener being dropped for the next game against New Zealand and handed a fine.

Warner later apologised for his behaviour. In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, he explained that he was upset after seeing Root wearing an Australian-themed wig on his chin. However, Warner also admitted that alcohol and his temper likely influenced his actions.

#1 Mony Panesar

Former England spinner Monty Panesar landed in controversy in 2013 after being fined by police for urinating on nightclub bouncers who had removed him from a club in Brighton. Reports claimed Panesar was removed from the Shooshh nightclub after complaints about his behaviour before allegedly urinating on security staff from the promenade above the venue.

Panesar then reportedly tried to flee, but the bouncers chased him down and caught him inside a nearby pizza shop. He was subsequently taken back to the club and handed over to the police. The former England cricketer received a £90 fine and later issued an unconditional apology for the incident.
