5 Cricketers Who Got Arrested For Weird Reasons

Cricketers getting arrested for wrong or weird reasons have been a regularity in the world of the sport in recent times. While some of them were wrongly arrested, some created crimes like match-fixing to get themselves arrested. Apart from match-fixing, there have been other controversial events like allegations for sexual assault or because of their off-field rumbles or drug possession which has seen cricketers being arrested.

Here is look at 5 Cricketers who got arrested for wrong or weird reasons. 

Suresh Raina

Raina was recently arrested from a Mumbai club as he was attending a party. According to the police he was arrested for breaching the COVID-19 protocols along with a few people from Bollywood. Raina’s team then sent out a statement saying that he was unaware of breaching the protocols and that he would be careful from hereon. Raina’s arrest was booked under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (whoever unlawfully or negligently does any act which is, and which he knows or has reason to believe to be, likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and provisions of NMDA.

Vinod Kambli

The former Indian cricketer was arrested for harassing his housemaid along with his wife. Soni Nafesinh Sarsal who was working as house help said that Vinod Kambli and his wife didn’t allow her to return home and unreasonably confined her for three days when she asked the couple for wages. The woman further alleged that she was also imprisoned and beaten up while asking for her wages. 

Meanwhile, as per Kambli’s wife Andrea Hewitt, their maid was addicted to taking drugs and often remained absent. Kambli has been in the news over the years for all the wrong reasons and this is a case from 2015.

Praveen Kumar

The former Indian swing bowler was wrongly alleged for hitting his neighbour and his son. Kumar also made headlines for being involved in a street-fight with a doctor. 

Praveen said in response that “It is all a lie. In fact, he tried to snatch my chain. It is a case of local politics and nothing else. I don’t even live in that area. I have two-three houses there and I had gone to see the status of paintwork there.” As per reports, Praveen’s India career was also cut short after this incident.

Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram is another of the noted cricketers to have been arrested for weird reasons. Akram along with Waqar Younis and Aaqib Javed was wrongly arrested in the Caribbean after a few fans claiming to be their fans came to them with cigars. They gave a few cigars to the police who arrested them purely on misinformation. However, the players were not held guilty unless there was a scientific test which could prove them positive.

Amit Mishra

The veteran Indian spinner was also one of the former players who was arrested purely on misinformation and confusion. It happened back in 2015, when Mishra was a part of the Indian squad which played a four-match Test series against South Africa. There were charges of sexual harassment criminal intimidation and causing injury under the sections of IPC against Mishra. The complainant said that the cricketer had verbally abused her, twisted her right arm and threw a kettle at her. 

However, Amit Mishra denied any such claims during interrogation and was later granted bail on the High Court’s judgment.
