He also reached the pinnacle of ODI rankings of batsmen in the least innings in ODIs which is still a record. The World Cup-winning captain is today being celebrated by every Indian. His image of hitting the six to seal the world cup final at Wankhade is one of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket history.

5. The first to score 10000 runs at an average of 50

Dhoni may have started his ODI career with a duck but quickly changed his fortunes around. The charismatic batsman in 2018 became the first-ever batsman to achieve 10,000 ODI runs at an average of over 50.

No batsman left his crease in advance when they saw the lightning-fast Dhoni with the keeping gloves. The former India skipper holds the record of executing the most stumpings in ODI cricket. He stumped batsman 123 times and took 321 matches. When it comes to the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in ODIs, he is only behind Adam Gilchrist and Sangakkara.


3. The only Asian captain to win to the man of the match in the World Cup final

We often talk about big match players in cricket who raise their game when the team needed them the most. MS Dhoni was that one batsman on whom the team banked on during high-pressure matches. The World Cup final it just doesn’t get any bigger than that. At the Wankhade Stadium in 2011, the Indian captain produced magical innings of 91* that helped India won the world cup after 28 years.

Just one year after making his international debut, Dhoni came out to bat at number 3. He smashed every Sri Lankan bowler to all parts of the ground and struck 15 boundaries and 10 maximums in his 145 ball knock.

1. Most wins by an Indian captain in ODI cricket

The list has to end with a captaincy record of the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He became India’s skipper in 2008 and captained the side for eight years. Dhoni in his tenure as ODI skipper became arguably the greatest limited-overs skipper the world has ever seen.

His numbers as an ODI skipper is simply mindboggling as he won 110 matches out of 200 in which he captained the Men in Blue. This is a record for any Indian captain with Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly coming in at 2 and 3 with 90 and 76 wins respectively.

MS Dhoni has a winning percentage of 59.52 which makes him a transcendent leader. Ricky Ponting is the only captain that has more wins as ODI skipper than Dhoni with 165 victories to his name.
