5 International Cricketers Who Went To Jail For Various Reasons

International cricketers is called a gentleman game that is enjoyed by all age groups with bat, ball, field, and entertainment. There have been great matches in cricketing history that had made audiences enjoy the fullest.

There were a few cricketers that went in the wrong direction in search of easy money but resulting in a negative image among the people and also their careers.

Here we look at the 5 international cricketers who went to jail for various reasons.

Mohammed Aamir along with Mohammed Asif and Salman Butt

The match-fixing scandal took place during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010. Mohammed Aamir was at his prime best at the age of 17 but went through the wrong path. During the Test match at Lords in 2010, Salman Butt gave instructions to Mohammad Aamir to deliver no-balls. Mohammed Aamir and Mohammed Asif were the main culprits during the spot fixing scandal.

Mohammed Aamir was given six months in jail in November 2011 by the institution Southwark Crown Court for the conspiracy to cheat at gambling and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments.

Asif was handed 12 months in jail by the court and 30 months custody for Pakistan skipper then Salman Butt.

Ben Stokes

The all-rounder from England, Ben Stokes was involved in a pub brawl in Bristol. He was accompanied by Alex Hales. Both of them sat in jail overnight and continued to be in jail the next day as it was a holiday.

Alex Hales was out of the case while Stokes remained for the hearing. Stokes gave reasons that he was saving gay couples who were attacked by the guys who were beaten by him.

The men involved in the case said that Ben Stokes looked out of sorts after drinking on the night of the club. The video footage also showed Stokes punching the victim by the street camera.

Sreesanth

The Indian pace bowler Sreesanth was involved in a match-fixing scandal including a few domestic cricketers. It turned out to be a disaster for the pace bowler.

Sreesanth was involved in featuring for Rajasthan Royals under the watchful eyes of Rahul Dravid. The report suggests that the pace bowler was accepted to leak 14 or more runs when he bowls them with a towel in his stomach.

He went through a lot of criticism from the fans and also his photographs were burnt. Sreesanth fought hard against the judgment as the BCCI decided on Zero tolerance policy. The pace bowler moved to the apex court.

Wasim Akram

Pakistan premier pace bowler Wasim Akram is also one of the few international cricketers to visit the jail. The incident took place during his playing days when Pakistan toured West Indies in 1993.

The incident involved Wasim Akram along with best friends Mushtaq Ahmed, Waqar Younis, and Aqib Javed. It took place when all of them went for a jog on the sidelines of the beach.

Wasim Akram along with Waqar Younis, Aqib Javed, and Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested for having an illegal drug.

The precautionary sample resulted in the ingredient being close to an illegal drug. All of them were out of jail with bail.

Rubel Hossain

The Bangladesh pace bowler Rubel Hossain was another international cricketer sent to jail. He was put into custody after a long-time girlfriend gave a complaint to rape her. Hossain’s girlfriend said he broke his promise of marrying her and instead put an attack.

He was sent to jail ahead of the ICC World Cup 2015 played in Australia. BCB asked the higher official to release Rubel for the national interest. The lady took the complaint back from the policeman.

Rubel Hossain performed brilliantly for Bangladesh in the World Cup 2015 as they reached the quarterfinals of a major tournament losing to India.
