5 Major Price Drops in the IPL 2025 Auction

The IPL 2025 Auction has concluded, with Saudi Arabia hosting the mega event for the first time. It turned out to be a memorable occasion for many players, as the 10 IPL franchises spent crores to secure their desired picks.

While several top players enjoyed hefty paydays, a few saw their salaries take a hit. Auction dynamics led to some highly talented cricketers being acquired for surprisingly low amounts.

Here are the 5 major price drops in IPL 2025:

#1 Glenn Maxwell – ₹11 crore to ₹4.2 crore

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, typically a hot pick at IPL auctions, saw a surprising dip in demand this year, largely due to his disappointing performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2024.

Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings expressed interest in Maxwell, but he ultimately rejoined his former team, PBKS, for ₹4.2 crore—a significant ₹6.8 crore reduction in his salary.

#2 Spencer Johnson – ₹10 crore to ₹2.8 crore

Kolkata Knight Riders sought an overseas pacer after failing to re-sign Mitchell Starc at the IPL 2025 Auction. They turned to Starc’s compatriot Spencer Johnson, who had earned ₹10 crore in his debut season with Gujarat Titans earlier this year.

However, interest in Johnson was limited this time. KKR secured him for just ₹2.8 crore, marking a ₹7.2 crore drop in his salary.

#3 Sameer Rizvi – ₹8.4 crore to ₹95 lakh

Uncapped Indian all-rounder Sameer Rizvi made waves at the IPL 2024 Auction when Chennai Super Kings splurged ₹8.4 crore to secure him. However, he failed to live up to expectations and was subsequently released.

While CSK attempted to re-sign him, they refrained from aggressive bidding. Ultimately, Delhi Capitals acquired Rizvi for ₹95 lakh, slashing his salary by ₹7.45 crore.

#4 Mitchell Starc – ₹24.75 crore to ₹11.75 crore

Mitchell Starc was one of only two players to experience a salary drop of over ₹10 crore. Last year, Kolkata Knight Riders made him the most expensive player at the mini-auction, spending ₹24.75 crore.  This season, Starc will play for Delhi Capitals with a salary of ₹11.75 crore, marking a significant ₹13 crore reduction.

#5 Sam Curran – ₹18.5 crore to ₹2.4 crore

English all-rounder Sam Curran set an unfortunate record for the largest salary drop at the IPL 2025 Auction. Last season, he was signed by Punjab Kings for ₹18.5 crore. This year, Chennai Super Kings acquired him for ₹2.4 crore, resulting in a staggering ₹16.1 crore decrease in his salary.
