Star India pays a whopping amount for BCCI television & digital rights

In a great news, Star India won the BCCI rights for Indian Cricket on television and digital rights from 2018-2023. It is a big moment for Star to win Cricket rights for Indian matches.

In September 2017, the BCCI had sold worldwide IPL television and digital rights for the period of 2018-2022 for INR 16.347.5 Crores to Star India. From 2012-2018 Star winning bid for Indian media was INR 3851 Crores. Now from 2018-2023, Star winning bid for India media rights has been doubled to 6138.1 Crores.

Star India will broadcast 102 men’s international matches over the next five years. In the last five year period from 2012-2018, Star broadcasted 96 matches.

The Indian home matches across 102 matches will be spread year wise which included 18 in 2018-19, 26 in 2019-20, 14 in 2020-21, 23 in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. Star will broadcast Indian domestic matches, men’s Indian matches and Indian women’s international matches.

From 2018-2022, Star won rights for 508 Crores per year cost, and Star won bid rights for each IPL cost comes to 8.47 Crore.

Star India CEO Uday Shankar during the press conference   “Like everything else, BCCI rights come a little expensive. But it has been a good experience with BCCI all these years. We are focussing more on consolidated rights. We have always believed in looking at rights as combo offerings. The experience of the auction was great but it was like a movie that it just went on and on. It was good from BCCI”s point of view because it got them more revenue.”

Facebook, Google, Star India Private Limited, Reliance Industries Limited and Sony Pictures Network India Private Limited came to fray in the auction for 102 matches in India from June 2018 to March 2023. After that Star India Private Limited, Reliance Industries Limited and Sony Pictures Network India Private Limited were eligible to submit finical bids.

Star India will host Cricket rights in India, Indian Premier League and also ICC tournaments. They are also scheduled to telecast matches played in New Zealand and also India matches played in New Zealand in January – February 2019.
