Curtailed IPL To Teams Divided Into Groups Among Many Options Discussed In Governing Council Meeting

Due to the Coronavirus, a lot of sporting events have been affected and IPL is no exception. The cash-rich IPL has also been affected by the Coronavirus as the league has been postponed to 15th April from its original date which was scheduled for 29th March.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the Indian government imposed a ban on travel and three Indian states to host any IPL games. There is no clarity over when will the league start. It could even become worse if the COVID-19 situation does not improve in the coming few days. Media reports are also suggesting that the league could be called off this year if the IPL does not start by April 20.

After the governing council meeting in Mumbai, a committee member told the media what was the different ideas discussed by them to host IPL this year.

“There were six to seven options discussed during the meeting between team owners and BCCI including a curtailed IPL,” the source told PTI.

“The second option right now is that teams could be divided into two groups of four and then top four go into the play-offs. The third option is the increase of doubleheaders (played on weekdays),” the source added.

The other option was that the games only take place in a few centres with limited travel of the players and also take place behind closed doors with no crowd coming to see the game.

The source also confirmed that taking IPL to another country was not discussed. Meanwhile, the series against South Africa was rescheduled and it would take place later.
