“A Game Or Two Is Not Going To Define Shreyas Iyer” – Abhishek Nayar Supports Struggling Indian Batter

Abhishek Nayar is confident that Shreyas Iyer will regain his form in ODI cricket and believes that a couple of poor performances won’t define his abilities. Nayar suggests that all Shreyas needs is to play one good innings to turn things around.

Shreyas Iyer returned to international cricket during the Asia Cup after healing from a back injury, but he was unable to participate in the Super 4 round and the final of the tournament due to back spasms.

In addition to his fitness, there are also worries about his batting performance. He was out for 14 runs during the Asia Cup group match against Pakistan. In the recent match against Australia in Mohali, he was run out for 3 runs off 8 balls due to a mix-up with Shubman Gill.

When talking about Shreyas’ dismissal on Jio Cinema, Nayar expressed his support for the batsman and stated that he has the potential for a significant comeback.

“He’s a professional cricketer and being part of the IPL setup for a long time and this Indian team for a couple of years now, he understands that you made a mistake and the communication wasn’t great.”

“It maybe wasn’t the right time to pick that single. India were in a comfortable position. But you expect Shreyas Iyer to come back from this,” he said.

Nayar mentioned that Shreyas won’t experience any undue pressure because the Indian team is supporting him. He also highlighted that Shreyas has a track record as a successful performer in the one-day format.

“He has come back before as well and I am sure he is going to be in a relaxed space because of the environment in this Indian team is where they are backing players.”

“He knows he has done well over a period of time. A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer. It’s just about him finding that one inning. Iyer has done it for India in this format,” he added.

Shreyas’ early exit didn’t impact India, as they comfortably secured victory in the first ODI against Australia. Following Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul, four Indian batsmen scored half-centuries, allowing the Men in Blue to successfully chase a target of 277 in 48.4 overs with five wickets to spare.

Shreyas Iyer’s strong performance in ODIs

Although Shreyas had recent failures in his last two ODIs, his overall record in the format is impressive. In 45 matches, he has amassed 1648 runs at an average of 44.54, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries.

The right-handed batsman is eager to deliver a substantial performance when India takes on Australia in Indore on Sunday.
