Pakistan’s interim head coach, Aaqib Javed, has refuted claims that he scolded or harshly criticized the team’s batters following their disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. After Pakistan suffered consecutive defeats against New Zealand and India, reports surfaced suggesting that Javed had berated the players for their lack of intent. However, the former fast bowler denied these allegations, asserting that he does not believe in a culture of reprimanding or abusing players.

“I don’t scold players at all. In our culture, coaches and teachers often resort to scolding and even beating, but I do not believe in this approach. I respect players and prefer to help them improve through practice and guidance,” Javed stated in a press conference before Pakistan’s final Group A match against Bangladesh.

Need for Consistency in Pakistan Cricket

Addressing Pakistan’s poor scoring rate in the tournament, Javed emphasized the importance of adapting to conditions rather than chasing arbitrary targets. He pointed out that during the T20 World Cup, Pakistan struggled to reach even modest totals, which highlighted the need for a more structured and consistent approach to their game.

“We need to improve our overall game, but consistency is key. This applies not only to players but also to the cricket board and management. Over the past four to five years, there have been frequent changes at the administrative level. If a policy is not allowed to run for the long term, achieving stability and success will be difficult,” Javed explained.

He urged the cricket board to adopt a long-term strategy instead of making frequent changes that disrupt team development. Comparing Pakistan to other cricketing nations, he noted that teams with stable leadership and policies tend to perform better in international tournaments.

Players Disappointed but Determined to Improve

Pakistan’s early exit from the Champions Trophy marked their third consecutive failure in ICC tournaments, following their fifth-place finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup and a group-stage exit in the 2024 T20 World Cup after losing to the USA. Javed acknowledged the disappointment among players and fans but maintained that the team is committed to improving.

“There are no excuses, and there shouldn’t be any. The players are just as hurt as the fans. They understand their shortcomings and are determined to work harder. The only way forward is to keep trying and focus on improving our team,” Javed stated.

As Pakistan looks ahead to future tournaments, Javed’s emphasis on respect, consistency, and long-term planning could play a crucial role in shaping the team’s performance.
