Abhishek Sharma Breaks Virat Kohli’s Record Against Pakistan

In a high-voltage Asia Cup 2025 clash against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India opener Abhishek Sharma etched his name into the record books. The 25-year-old played a fearless knock, smashing 31 runs off just 13 deliveries while chasing a modest target of 128.

His blistering start ensured India gained early control of the chase on a tricky surface. More importantly, Abhishek became the first Indian batter to score 30 or more runs in the Powerplay against Pakistan in a T20I match, surpassing a record long held by Virat Kohli.

Surpassing Kohli’s Feat

Virat Kohli, who had previously held the record, scored 29 runs in the Powerplay against Pakistan during the Asia Cup 2022 at the very same venue in Dubai. While Kohli’s innings back then was celebrated as a defining performance, Abhishek’s achievement now sets a new benchmark in India-Pakistan T20 encounters.

His ability to take on the new ball bowlers without hesitation and accelerate from the very beginning highlighted both his confidence and his aggressive intent. In the overall record list, Abhishek now stands third behind Pakistan’s Nasir Jamshed, who made 34 in 2012, and Imran Nazir, who struck 33 in 2007.

Rising Star on the Global Stage

Abhishek’s knock not only gave India a flying start but also reaffirmed his standing as one of the finest T20 players in the modern era. Currently ranked the world’s No. 1 T20I batter, he sits above compatriot Tilak Varma and England’s Phil Salt. This latest record against Pakistan adds another feather to his cap and cements his reputation as a match-winner in pressure situations.

His performance reflects the fearless approach of the new generation of Indian cricketers, who are carrying forward the team’s legacy in high-stakes clashes. With his consistency, explosive batting, and growing stature on the international stage, Abhishek Sharma is proving to be a cornerstone of India’s T20 setup.
