Abhishek Sharma Poised To Break Virat Kohli’s Iconic T20I Record In Asia Cup Final

Young opener Abhishek Sharma has become the center of attention ahead of the Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan in Dubai. Known for his explosive starts with Australian batter Travis Head for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, Abhishek carried that form into the Asia Cup and established himself as the leading run-scorer.

In six matches, he has scored 309 runs at an impressive average of 51.50 and a strike rate above 200, including three consecutive half-centuries during the Super Four stage. His highest score of 75 showcased his ability to provide solid platforms for India at the top. With his consistency and attacking style, Abhishek has emerged as one of the most impactful players in the tournament.

On the Verge of Breaking Historic Records

Abhishek Sharma is now within touching distance of surpassing some of the biggest names in T20 cricket. He is only 11 runs away from breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a multi-nation T20I competition. Kohli had scored 319 runs during the 2014 T20 World Cup, averaging over 106 with four half-centuries, a performance that earned him the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award.

Apart from this, Abhishek is also chasing England’s Phil Salt’s record of most runs by a batter from a Test-playing nation in a T20I series or tournament. Salt had smashed 331 runs in five games during a series against West Indies in 2023, including two centuries. Abhishek, with just 23 runs needed, is close to overtaking this milestone as well.

Consistency in T20 Cricket

Abhishek has also equaled the record of Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Rizwan for the most successive 30-plus scores in T20s, with seven such knocks in a row. One more score above 30 will place him ahead of these two modern-day greats. His 2025 T20I season has been remarkable, scoring 588 runs in 11 matches at an average of over 53 and a strike rate above 211, including a century and four fifties.

Overall, in his T20I career, he has accumulated 844 runs in 23 innings with a strike rate close to 198, along with two centuries and five half-centuries. His highest score of 135 reflects his potential to dominate bowlers consistently. With his aggressive yet reliable batting, Abhishek Sharma is not only rewriting records but also establishing himself as one of India’s brightest stars in the shortest format of the game.
