Abhishek Sharma Surpasses Travis Head To Claim No.1 Spot In T20I Rankings

Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has climbed to the No.1 spot in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings, overtaking his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate Travis Head. Abhishek, who has been in remarkable form since his debut in the shortest format, now stands alongside Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav as only the third Indian to reach the top of the T20I batting rankings.

Travis Head had held the No.1 position for nearly a year after replacing Suryakumar Yadav following the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, Head’s absence from the recent series against West Indies allowed Abhishek to overtake him. The Punjab-based batter made his international debut soon after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, during the tour of Zimbabwe.

Despite a quiet start in his first match, Abhishek roared back with a century in his second outing. His standout performances, especially in the series against South Africa and England earlier this year, played a key role in his rise to the top. At Wankhede, the 24-year-old hit a record 135 off 54 balls—India’s highest T20I score, and became the fastest to a T20I century in just 10.1 overs.

Travis Head Jumps To No. 2; Tilak Varma And India Captain Also In Top 10

Travis Head now holds the second position in the rankings, just above India’s Tilak Varma, who also impressed with strong performances in the series against South Africa and England. India’s T20I captain currently occupies the sixth spot, making him the third Indian batter in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped two places and now sits at 11th following the latest rankings update. In the latest bowling rankings, Jacob Duffy continues to hold the top position, while India’s Varun Chakravarthy sits at No.3. The top 10 also features Ravi Bishnoi at No.7 and Arshdeep Singh, who slipped one spot to No.10.

Axar Patel currently holds the 14th position. All these players, along with Abhishek Sharma, are expected to return to action during India’s Asia Cup campaign, which kicks off on September 10 with a match against the UAE.
