India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma delivered a breathtaking performance in the first T20I against New Zealand, powering the hosts to a commanding victory with a stunning 84 off just 35 deliveries. His aggressive innings, studded with eight sixes and five boundaries, laid the foundation for India’s massive total of 238 for seven.

The visitors were eventually bowled out well short of the target, handing India a convincing 48-run win and an early lead in the series. Sharma’s fearless approach at the top ensured India seized control early, keeping the New Zealand bowlers under constant pressure.

“I Don’t Feel My Role Is High-Risk”

Despite his reputation as a big-hitter, Sharma was keen to clarify that his batting philosophy is rooted more in timing and awareness than reckless aggression. Speaking after being named Player of the Match, the left-hander underlined that he does not view his role as overly dangerous.

“I don’t feel my role is high-risk … I’m more of a timing batter, I need to watch the ball and get used to the conditions,” he said. Sharma explained that while intent is crucial in modern T20 cricket, it does not necessarily mean swinging at every delivery. His focus remains on reading the pitch and bowlers before executing his shots, allowing him to score freely without compromising consistency.

Preparation, Instinct, and a Clear Game Plan

Sharma also shed light on the preparation that goes into sustaining such an attacking style at the international level. Acknowledging that opposition teams now come with specific plans to counter him, he stressed the importance of backing one’s instincts. “We had a plan from day one and are just following it. I’ve figured out if you want to hit all balls or strike at 200, you have to carry intent,” he remarked.

He further added, “All teams have a plan for me. It’s about my preparation. I’m going to back my instinct.” According to Sharma, his net sessions are designed to simulate match scenarios, helping him adapt quickly once he steps onto the field. This blend of preparation, confidence, and clarity of role has allowed him to flourish and could make him a key asset for India as they build momentum in the T20I series.
