The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended Jonathan Trott’s tenure as head coach for another 12 months, following the team’s remarkable success under his leadership. In 2023, Afghanistan made waves by beating defending champions England and former world champions Pakistan in the ODI World Cup in India.
In June 2024, they achieved another milestone by eliminating Australia in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup. This was Afghanistan’s first-ever semifinal appearance in an ICC event. After the T20 World Cup, Afghanistan also triumphed over South Africa and Bangladesh in ODI series.

On December 9, the ACB confirmed that Jonathan Trott will remain as head coach in 2025. Board officials are pleased with the team’s progress and anticipate even greater achievements in the coming year.
Can Jonathan Trott lead Afghanistan to their first ICC trophy?
Although Afghanistan has won several Qualifier tournaments, they have yet to secure a major ICC event victory. They have a chance to break their title drought next year at the ICC Champions Trophy.
Afghanistan earned a spot in the tournament by finishing in the Top 8 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 points table. They will compete with seven other teams for the prestigious title, with the last two editions of the Champions Trophy being won by Asian teams.
It will be exciting to see if Afghanistan can claim the trophy. Additionally, head coach Jonathan Trott will also be tasked with preparing a strong T20I squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Regarding Afghanistan’s upcoming schedule, the team is set to tour Zimbabwe. Trott will serve as the coach for the ODI series only, as he will miss the Tests and T20Is due to personal reasons. During his absence, Hamid Hassan and Nawroz Mangal will take over as head coach and assistant coach, respectively.
