The announcement of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad raised eyebrows as Shreyas Iyer, one of the country’s most consistent ODI performers in recent times, failed to find a place, not even among the reserves. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar shed light on why Iyer was left out despite his solid record. He emphasized that the exclusion was not due to a dip in form or lack of ability, but simply because of the team’s balance and depth in the batting department.
“With respect to Shreyas Iyer, who can he replace? It’s no fault of his, but neither ours,” Agarkar explained.
He also mentioned that similar tough decisions affected other talented players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who missed out because Abhishek Sharma has been performing well and offers a bowling option as well. According to Agarkar, these situations are unfortunate but inevitable when there is so much talent competing for limited opportunities.
Shreyas Iyer’s Consistent Contributions
The omission feels particularly harsh considering Iyer’s contributions in recent tournaments. In the Champions Trophy 2025, he played a crucial role in India’s victorious campaign, finishing as the team’s top run-scorer and the second-highest overall in the tournament.
Across five matches, he accumulated 243 runs at an impressive average of 48.60, registering two half-centuries and a highest score of 79. His ability to anchor the innings while also accelerating when required has made him a dependable middle-order option. Yet, despite these performances, the competition for spots meant Iyer could not be accommodated this time.
