Ajit Agarkar believes Subman Gill should bat in the middle order in Test cricket. Gill who is picked in the Indian squad for the Test series against Australia batted as an opener in the first practice match. The talented youngster looked impressive but wasn’t able to play a big knock. After Prithvi Shaw failed in both practice matches many consider that Gill should make his Test debut at Adelaide as an opening batsman.

However former India cricketer thinks differently and prefers Gill at the number 6 spot. In the built-up of the Test series, Agarkar pointed out that many want Gill to open but according to him he is best suited in the middle order in Test cricket.

Ajit Agarkar Wants Shubman Gill At 6 In Tests

“Everyone seems to be an opener at the moment in this squad, isn’t it? Because Vihari and Rahane are going to be playing in the middle order with Pujara”, Agarkar said on Sony Ten Network.

“So those are three spots that you would believe are occupied. My pick would be Shubman Gill [at 6]. I think a lot of people have picked him as an opener”.

“Yes, he opened in first-class cricket for a season or a little bit more and has a good record. But I still feel that his best position might be somewhere in the middle at least in Test cricket because I don’t see any better options at this point”, added Agarkar.

Meanwhile, Agarkar also revealed his pick between Gill and KL Rahul at this stage in Test cricket.

“People could point to KL Rahul and his white-ball form but if I had to pick, I’ll go with Shubman Gill”, Agarkar concluded.

Furthermore, it may be the case that team India might not play Gill in the first Test and give another chance to Shaw to open alongside Gill. Once captain Virat Kohli leaves after the first Test, Gill can be included in the side as a middle-order batsman. The first Test will be a day and night encounter between Australia and India that will begin at Adelaide on December 17.
