Former Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble has expressed his disagreement with the decision to place KL Rahul at No. 6 in India’s batting order during the ongoing Champions Trophy. The strategy, implemented by Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, has drawn criticism despite Rahul’s impressive performances. Kumble believes that Rahul, given his consistency and ability to finish games, deserves to bat higher in the lineup.
In India’s semifinal clash against Australia, Rahul played a vital role, scoring an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls. His innings helped India secure a four-wicket victory and a place in the final. However, Kumble pointed out that sending all-rounder Axar Patel ahead of Rahul is not an ideal tactical move. He emphasized that Rahul’s ability to accelerate the scoring and handle pressure makes him a more suitable choice for a higher batting position.
Kumble Highlights Rahul’s Consistency and Pressure
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo Match Day, Kumble noted that Rahul’s track record speaks for itself. “If he gets to 30, he ensures the team crosses the line,” Kumble stated, adding that Rahul has consistently delivered in crucial moments. The wicketkeeper-batsman has remained unbeaten in the 40s in two out of his three innings so far, maintaining a solid strike rate of 96.36.
Kumble also acknowledged the intense pressure Rahul faces. He remarked that when Rahul performs well, it is expected, but if he fails even once, criticism quickly follows. Rahul’s role as a wicketkeeper also adds to the demands placed on him, but he has managed to rise to the occasion. Despite missing out on a big score against New Zealand earlier, he has proven his worth throughout the tournament.
KL Rahul Accepts His Role in the Team
Despite Kumble’s concerns, Rahul himself has expressed acceptance of his batting position. Following India’s semifinal victory, he admitted that he prefers batting higher up the order but is comfortable adapting to the team’s requirements. Speaking to Star Sports, Rahul explained that his experience in red-ball cricket and white-ball formats has helped him adjust to different roles.
He acknowledged that batting at No. 6 requires a different approach, particularly in terms of boundary-hitting, and he has worked on improving that aspect of his game. While he would like to open, he remains committed to fulfilling his given role. With the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand set for March 9 in Dubai, Rahul will be looking to make another significant contribution to India’s campaign.
