Anrich Nortje Suffers Another Injury; Van der Dussen To Lead South Africa T20I Side

South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of action due to a stress reaction in his back. The severity of the injury means he will miss the upcoming T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe, where South Africa is set to compete against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

This setback continues a worrying trend for the talented pacer, who has been plagued by injuries over the last few years. At present, there is no clear timeline for his return, and his recovery is being closely monitored by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

Concerns from the Coaching Staff

South Africa’s red-ball head coach, Shukri Conrad, confirmed that the medical team has yet to establish a definite recovery period for Nortje. He acknowledged the emotional toll such recurring injuries can take on a player. Conrad noted that this is at least the second or third time Nortje has experienced a stress reaction in his back, which raises long-term fitness concerns.

Despite these challenges, Conrad stated that it was still too early to make any final judgments about Nortje’s future and that the team remains hopeful for his return once he’s fully fit.

A Career Interrupted by Injury

Nortje’s professional journey has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries. In recent times, he pulled out of the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season, where he was signed with the Los Angeles Knight Riders. He also missed the 2023 ODI World Cup due to a back injury, after previously dealing with toe and hip issues.

In the 2024 IPL season, his participation was minimal, featuring in only two matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders. These setbacks add to a long list that began in 2019 when a shoulder injury forced him out of the World Cup squad.

As of now, Nortje is not part of South Africa’s centrally contracted players list, which reflects the uncertainty surrounding his availability and fitness. While his raw pace and wicket-taking ability make him a valuable asset, his recurring fitness problems have cast a shadow over what could have been a more consistent international career.

Cricket South Africa, meanwhile, will have to look for alternative options as they prepare for future series without one of their most impactful bowlers.
