Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal has spoken out against the series of controversies that overshadowed the India vs Pakistan encounters during the Asia Cup 2025.
Dhumal expressed disappointment over the nature of incidents that took place both on and off the field, stressing that they were contrary to the spirit of cricket. “Many things happened that, in my opinion, should not have occurred on the sporting field, but they did. Now, we should not dwell on what has already happened,” he remarked.
His statement reflects growing concerns among cricket administrators and fans about how the rivalry between the two cricketing giants has been marred by unsportsmanlike conduct rather than celebrated for its competitive spirit.
PCB Actions Spark Backlash
Dhumal particularly highlighted a few instances that he felt crossed the line of acceptable behaviour. Among them was the refusal of some players to shake hands after the Group A match, a customary gesture of sportsmanship that holds significant symbolic value. This act was widely criticised by cricket experts and fans alike.
Another controversial moment came when Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi walked away with the winner’s trophy and medals following the final — an act perceived as disrespectful towards the Indian team and the tournament’s traditions.
These incidents, according to Dhumal, have dented the reputation of the tournament and highlighted the need for stronger adherence to cricket’s core values of respect, fairness, and sportsmanship.
Praise for India’s Dominance
Despite the controversies, Dhumal was quick to applaud the Indian team for their exceptional performance throughout the tournament. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India remained unbeaten and went on to clinch the Asia Cup title convincingly. Dhumal praised their consistency and composure, saying their success “affirmed India’s status as the world’s top T20 side.”
He emphasised that the players’ professionalism and focus were commendable, especially amid the external distractions that could have easily affected their campaign. Their victory, he added, was not only a testament to their talent but also a reflection of their mental strength and commitment to upholding the true spirit of the game.
