As the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy heats up, Team India has been in excellent form. However, with the semifinals around the corner, concerns regarding player fitness and potential squad changes were addressed by KL Rahul during a press conference on February 28.

KL Rahul’s Statement on Team Fitness

During his interaction with the media, Rahul assured fans that the squad is in good shape. According to him, “Fitness-wise, there are no concerns about anyone missing a game as far as I know.”

This statement should provide relief to Indian fans, especially after Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami had minor fitness issues in their match against Pakistan.

Team India’s Approach Before Semifinals

Rahul emphasized that the team management would likely not experiment much before the semifinals.

He noted, “There are temptations to try different players before the semis, but I am not sure that will be the case. There is little time before the semifinals, so you would want players to get maximum game time. This is my perspective, but things could change. I am not part of the leadership group.”

This suggests that India might continue with their settled XI to ensure players get maximum game time before the knockouts.

KL Rahul Acknowledges Pressure Due to Pant’s Presence

Team India’s wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has openly admitted to feeling the pressure, knowing that he is preferred over a star player like Rishabh Pant in India’s ODI setup. However, he has also made it clear that he is not trying to compete with Pant but is instead focused on giving his best whenever he gets the opportunity.

Rahul stated, “There is (competition with Pant), I won’t lie. He is a very talented player and has shown all of us what he can do and how aggressively he can play and how quickly he can change the game. So there is always a temptation in the team with the captain and the coach to think if they should play him or play me.”

Despite acknowledging the competition, Rahul emphasized that he is not trying to imitate Pant’s style but is playing to his strengths.

Rahul concluded, “For me, whenever I get the opportunity, I try and see what I can do best. I am not trying to compete with Rishabh. I am not trying to play like him, or I am sure when he gets a chance, he is not trying to play like anybody else. He is picked on the basis of how he can play, and the same applies to me.”

India’s Decision to Back Rahul Over Pant

Pant’s unfortunate car accident in December 2022 meant Rahul took over as the keeper-batter for the 2023 ODI World Cup. He impressed with both gloves and bat, scoring 452 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.33.

Team India’s Performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy

India has dominated Group A, with convincing wins against England and Pakistan. A win against New Zealand would boost their confidence before the semifinals. India will play New Zealand in their final group-stage match on March 2 in Dubai. This match could determine their semifinal opponent.
