‘As great as Tendulkar and Viv Richards were…’: West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose Talks About Virat Kohli’s Weaknesses

Curtly Ambrose, the legendary West Indies cricketer, has lauded the greatness of Indian cricketer, Virat Kohli while dispelling the notion of so-called “weaknesses” in his game.

Ambrose referenced examples of other cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Viv Richards to emphasize that every batsman, regardless of their skill, encounters vulnerable phases in their career.

Kohli’s recent century in the second Test against West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad, marked his first away century in red-ball cricket since November 2019, and the first outside Asia since 2018.

Despite a three-year period with an average below 30 between 2020 and 2022, Kohli’s current Test average stands at 49.29. With 8676 runs to his name, he ranks third among active cricketers and shares a remarkable 29 Test centuries with the iconic Don Bradman.

These statistics exemplify Kohli’s greatness, where even a score of 60 or 70 runs can feel like a failure due to the high expectations set by his outstanding track record.

While Kohli has faced criticism for occasionally falling to full and wide deliveries and struggling against quality wrist spin and left-arm spin, Ambrose refuses to label these as weaknesses or vulnerabilities.

Instead of focusing on specific weaknesses, Ambrose emphasizes that cricket is a game of uncertainties, and even the greatest players like Sir Viv Richards and Sachin Tendulkar have experienced low scores in their careers.

Ambrose further admires Kohli’s dedication to fitness, which has played a crucial role in his all-format success. The former West Indian fast bowler has observed Kohli’s relentless work ethic behind the scenes, including his focus on fitness, diet, and overall preparation.

The towering figure with over 600 international wickets acknowledges Kohli as a player he has always admired, describing his playing style as fluid and pleasing to the eye.

Unlike some ultra-aggressive players, Kohli’s natural game revolves around his solid defense and elegant stroke-play.

Although he possesses the ability to go for big sixes, his finesse and ability to score quickly without excessive reliance on hitting sixes make him a captivating batsman to watch.

Kohli is next scheduled to take the field in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, commencing in Bridgetown, Barbados.

As fans eagerly await his performance, Ambrose’s words of praise reaffirm Kohli’s stature as one of the greatest cricketers of his generation.
