Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain feels veteran batter Joe Root should bat at No.3 in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series. England is 2-1 down in the five-match test series. Ahead of the fourth Test, they face a selection headache for the No.3 spot, with Ollie Pope ruled out of the series.
Harry Brook played at the spot in the first innings of the recently concluded third Test at Headingley, Leeds. However, he couldn’t make much of an impact. England sent in Moeen Ali in his place, but he too couldn’t make much of the opportunity. Former cricketer Nasser Hussain feels Joe Root should bat at No. 3 for England in the ongoing series.
Speaking to SKY Sports, Nasser Hussain expressed, “I’d be trying to convince Joe Root to bat at No.3. They may not do it. He said before the game (third Test) actually, Joe, in the press conference, ‘I’m quite happy to move to No.3.’”
Joe Root is England’s best player: Nasser Hussain
Joe Root has scored over 11000 runs for England in Test matches, including 30 centuries. Batting at Number 3, he has scored 2222 runs in 59 innings, at an average of 39.6, with four centuries and fourteen fifties. Former cricketer Nasser Hussain lauded Joe Root as “England’s best player”. He added that the veteran batter should bat at No. 3 in the upcoming tests.
“And then obviously, Brook did it, but I would be trying to convince Joe Root to go out and bat No.3. He’s England’s best player. He will end up England’s greatest-ever batter, and that’s where he should be coming in, one down.”
So far in the ongoing 2023 Ashes series, Joe Root has scored 190 runs in six innings. He slammed a century in the second test at Lord’s. The fourth Test is all set to take place from Wednesday 19 to Sunday, 23 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
