The risky Alex Carey was dismissed by the former England captain Joe Root on Day 5 of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old managed to hold onto a difficult caught and bowled opportunity as the Australian keeper-batter slammed it back to the bowler, bringing the visitors down to 227-8 in pursuit of 281.
Despite the availability of the new cherry, England captain Ben Stokes chose to bat with the old ball until the 81st over of the innings, which resulted in the dismissal.
Carey ran down the track to a full ball and smacked it, but Root saw the ball well and held onto the catch.

Earlier, the Yorkshire cricketer had missed a few opportunities. At 107-3 at the start of the day, Australia still needed 174 points to win.
After a lengthy delay brought on by rain, the visitors lost nightwatchman Scott Boland and Travis Head in the first session.
Usman Khawaja, on the other hand, remained unmoving and formed two beneficial alliances with Cameron Green and Carey.
Khawaja’s innings was ended by Stokes, who sent him back for 65 off 197 after he hit seven extra-base hits.
With the bat, Joe Root had a very successful game.
Root performed admirably with the bat in both innings. He scores a perfect 46 in the second and a hundred in the first.
As Stokes declared at 393-8 late on the first day, the right-hander, who had made an unbeaten 118, was unable to continue.
After a 55-run ninth-wicket stand between Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, Australia finally won the match.
A historic victory at Edgbaston was achieved thanks to the 44 runs from the visiting captain and 16 from Lyon, who remained unbeaten.
Australia thus gained a 1-0 series advantage after the first game.
Usman Khawaja was named Player of the Match after scoring 141 and 65. On Tuesday, June 28, the second Test will begin at Lord’s.
