England wicket-keeper batter Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal sparked controversy in the 2023 Ashes series on Sunday, July 2 at The Lord’s in London. His dismissal has fired up the already intense battle between the two teams and has sparked the “spirit of the game” debate. The crowd too got involved as they booed the Australian team during the Lunch break.

Jonny Bairstow came to the crease following Ben Duckett’s wicket on the final of the Lord’s Test. He and skipper Ben Stokes had a long task ahead of getting England closer to the target. However, Jonny Bairstow’s wicket caused a huge blow to the hosts. In the fifty-second over, Cameron Green bowled a bouncer, which Bairstow ducked. The ball went to the wicketkeeper who collected it well.

Instantly, Jonny Bairstow walked out of his crease towards the non-striker without giving any indication to the keeper or the slip fielders. Sensing the opportunity, wicket-keeper Alex Carey scored a underarm direct hit. The batters usually tend to check with the keeper before leaving the crease to ensure that the ball is dead. However, Bairstow left the crease in a leisurely manner and had to pay the price for it.

Spirit of cricket pushed to the boundary: Brag Hogg on Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal

Former cricketer Brad Hogg shared his thoughts on the Jonny Bairstow dismissal. He reckons that the England batter should have been not-out, as he wasn’t attempting a run. Taking to Twitter, Brad Hogg wrote, Bairstow wicket, Not Out. Spirit of cricket pushed to the boundary. Not attempting a run, end of over, scratched crease then walked for the regulation BS chat between overs between batsman. #ashes #ENGvsAUS”
