Asia Cup 2023: Top 5 IPL Performers Who Are Not Included In India Squad

The Asia Cup 2023 is set to commence on August 30th. The participating countries have already revealed their squads, including India. The Indian team has begun their training camp in Alur. Recently, the 17-player squad for the tournament was unveiled by Ajit Agarkar, the Chairman of the selection committee.

Almost all the anticipated players secured spots in the squad, with a few exceptions. Yuzvendra Chahal’s omission is particularly surprising, as he was widely expected to be included. The selectors had different intentions. Prior to this announcement, experts shared their opinions on the squad.

Five top performers from IPL 2023 not part of India’s Asia Cup squad

5. Ruturaj Gaikwad

Consistently reliable for Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad had another impressive season in IPL 2023. Over the past few seasons, he’s been a steady contributor for his franchise. In 16 matches this season, he amassed 590 runs at an impressive average of 42.14. Possessing a strong technique, Gaikwad becomes unstoppable once he gains momentum.

His temperament indicates potential success at the highest level. With a strike rate of over 146 in IPL 2023, he hit 46 fours and 30 sixes. Gaikwad’s responsible batting has significantly contributed to his franchise’s achievements. Despite a national debut, he hasn’t fully solidified his position.

He could have been considered for the squad, possibly as the third opener. Given his performance in List A matches, his inclusion might have been discussed in case of injuries. The selectors have noticed his prolific abilities. With leadership qualities, he could potentially succeed Dhoni as captain. He is set to lead the Indian side in the upcoming Asian games later this year.

4. Varun Chakravarthy

Kolkata Knight Riders’ star spinner Varun Chakravarthy could have been an unexpected selection. Despite his prior debut for India in the T20 format, he hasn’t participated in one-day cricket yet.

In this season, Chakravarthy performed remarkably for KKR, even on their spin-unfriendly home ground. His bowling variations have been refined and skillfully combined. This year, he’s taken 20 wickets in 14 innings in the IPL. While his List A experience is limited, his bowling prowess outshines others at the moment.

3. Shivam Dube

This season’s IPL has revitalized the careers of several cricketers, and among them, Shivam Dube stands out. The tall left-handed batsman has showcased a transformed version of himself in this IPL.

CSK effectively used Dube in the middle order, compensating for their weaknesses. Across 14 innings, he accumulated over 400 runs with a strike rate approaching 160. Despite being a right-arm medium pacer, he didn’t bowl a single over in IPL 2023 under MS’s captaincy.

It’s challenging to find a player of Dube’s calibre in India. He possesses all the attributes a limited-overs team seeks. Nonetheless, he last wore the blue jersey four years ago. Perhaps the time has come again to introduce his name into the mix.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Emerging as the star of the moment, Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered an impressive performance during the recent West Indies tour. His remarkable batting display allowed fans to overlook his youthful age.

Possessing solid technique, he truly embodies Mumbai’s school of batting. This year, the tall left-handed batsman had his breakthrough IPL season. Continuing his exceptional IPL batting form, Jaiswal took on the role of a lone warrior for Rajasthan Royals.

His tally of 625 runs, achieved at a strike rate of 163, speaks volumes about his batting prowess. Opening the innings, he maintains a composed and serene demeanour. Jaiswal’s ability to time the ball swiftly and his effective hand-eye coordination are evident.

1. Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal was left out of the squad for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The anticipation of this decision was shared by several cricket experts, considering his recent decline in form. His exclusion raises the possibility that his dream of participating in the World Cup at home might be dashed.

In line with previous IPL seasons, Chahal remained among the leading wicket-takers. He secured 21 wickets across 14 matches while playing for Rajasthan Royals. He bowled during various stages of the game and aimed to enhance his skillset.

Beyond his bowling prowess, his limited batting capabilities contributed to his omission. A preference was given to an all-rounder instead, as Rohit Sharma emphasized batting depth. The team management could have retained faith in Chahal, given his extensive experience playing all across India. He could have partnered with Kuldeep Yadav, rekindling the ‘Kul Cha’ combination and sharing the workload.
