India captain Rohit Sharma‘s reputation for his clever wit shone once again during the press conference where India’s World Cup 2023 squad was unveiled. When chief selector Ajit Agarkar named him the captain, Rohit responded with a playful celebration and a broad grin.
It’s worth noting that Rohit, who was deeply disappointed after missing out on the 2011 World Cup co-hosted by India, has been quite outspoken about that experience. Going from not being in the World Cup squad to leading the team 12 years later in the prestigious event is a testament to the remarkable journey he’s undertaken in his career.

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.
Rohit Sharma acknowledges that certain players may be disappointed not to make it into India’s World Cup squad. Nevertheless, he clarified the challenges of selecting a final 15-member team and emphasized the advantages of having an abundance of talent to choose from.
He made a statement to reporters: “There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is best 15 we could get. Problem of plenty is a good problem to have.”
“We have to see who is in form and who our opposition is. We need to see what the best possible combination could be. If someone misses out, then so be it. This keeps happening. You have to make tough calls for the team,” he concluded.
It will be intriguing to observe how India manages to field both KL Rahul and the in-form Ishan Kishan against Pakistan on Sunday, now that Rahul is poised to join the Asia Cup squad.
