Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav Reveals Batting-Order Change Against Oman

India’s final group-stage match of the Asia Cup 2025 against Oman saw a surprising batting move, as T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav chose to send lower-order players to face the final overs instead of himself. The decision sparked curiosity among fans and experts, with many wondering why one of India’s top batters and the team captain did not finish the innings.

Ahead of India’s Super 4 encounter with Pakistan, Yadav explained that the strategy aimed to provide match experience to players who had limited time at the crease in earlier matches.

“From our batting point of view, our batters didn’t get a lot of game time, starting from Sanju (Samson), Hardik (Pandya), a lot of them, Axar (Patel), even (Shivam) Dube. Tilak (Varma) also against Pakistan didn’t get a lot of time to bat,” Yadav said.

The captain also clarified why he chose to send non-specialists Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh to bat in the final overs.

“Harshit (Rana) as you may know, he’s someone who can bat. So we wanted to see how he can bat in the last 3 or 4 overs and when 1 or 2 overs were left, Arshdeep said that he wanted to go into bat. I said no problem, you can definitely go in. It’s completely fine, but I bat or I don’t bat, winning the game is more important,” he commented

Suryakumar Yadav’s Team-First Move Divides Opinion

The move was primarily a team-focused strategy, aimed at giving fringe players a chance to experience real match situations while keeping India’s main goal of securing a win intact. Opinions on social media and among cricket experts were divided—some felt the captain should have taken charge at the crease, while others commended him for trusting his teammates and prioritizing squad development.

Oman put up a strong challenge, taking the contest to the final moments, but India’s superior bowling ensured a win for the Men in Blue. With this victory, India now shift focus to their vital Super 4 clash against Pakistan, carrying the confidence of a team that has balanced both performance and player development effectively in the early stages of the Asia Cup.
