Former Australian cricket legend Dean Jones has breathed his last of a massive heart attack. Jones was part of Star Sports commentary team for the ongoing Indian Premier League and was in a bio-secure bubble in a seven-star hotel in Mumbai. He was 59-year-old while breathing his last.

One of the most loved commentators in India, Jones almost became synonymous to the sport. His voice from the stands was so pleasing to the ears and his understanding of the game made it more eventful.

Meanwhile, last night he was live on air on Star Sports commentating from Mumbai studios for the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians game in IPL 2020. Star Sports released a statement to confirm the news and expressed their condolences for his family in this difficult time.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones AM,” Star India, who Jones was a commentator for, confirmed through a statement. “He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements.

“Dean Jones was one of the great ambassadors of the game associating himself with Cricket development across South Asia. He was passionate about discovering new talent and nurturing young Cricketers. Jones was a champion commentator whose presence and presentation of the game always brought joy to millions of fans. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Star and his millions of fans across the globe,” he added.

Dean Jones was a very popular name in India for his show ‘Prof Deano’ on NDTV. Along with IPL, he has commentated on all top cricketing events including many World Cups. It will be extremely difficult to fulfil his void in the commentary box.

The Aussie legend has played 52 Test matches scoring 3631 runs at an average of 46.55. With a 216 as his best score, Jones scored 11 centuries and was an important member of Allan Border’s team. Jones also played 164 ODIs and scored 6068 runs with the help of seven centuries and 46 fifties.

Jones was one of the first Australian batsmen cut out for the limited-overs game and he was quite successful at it.
