Ayush Mhatre Likely To Undergo Scans Before MI Fixture: Reports

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may be without their in-form batter Ayush Mhatre for around two to three weeks after he picked up a hamstring injury during their 10-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday, April 18.

The young player was seen walking off the field with the support staff after his dismissal, and batting coach Michael Hussey later shared an update that raised concerns.

“Ayush Mhatre has a hamstring tear. I don’t know how bad it is, we will have a scan, but it looks really bad unfortunately. It could be a big loss for us, because he has been in nice touch for us. He is an exciting young talent,” Hussey said after the match. (via The Times Of India.)

As per a report from the Indian Express, Ayush Mhatre is set to undergo medical scans in Mumbai ahead of CSK’s upcoming clash against their rivals, the Mumbai Indians (MI), on Thursday, April 23.

“Mhatre’s injury isn’t as bad as one feared with the batsman not experiencing any pain as of now. However, the real extent of the injury would be known only on Monday when he goes for a test. That he has been able to walk without any pain suggests, there is a chance of Mhatre coming back at a later stage of the tournament,” the report mentions.

Chennai Super Kings are dealing with a significant injury setback, with left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious quadriceps tear. The team had already been without overseas quick Nathan Ellis prior to the start of the tournament, and MS Dhoni is also in the process of recovering from a calf injury.

Ayush Mhatre Has Emerged As A Key Batting Force For CSK In IPL 2026

The right-handed batter’s aggressive approach has proved to be a major boost for CSK in the ongoing season. With skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad struggling for form, Mhatre has taken charge in the powerplay, making a strong impact at No. 3. In six matches in IPL 2026 so far, he has accumulated 201 runs at an average of 33.50 and an impressive strike rate of 177.87.

After starting his campaign with a duck, he has bounced back remarkably well. In his absence, CSK may need to reshuffle their batting order, with players like Sarfaraz Khan and Matthew Short likely to step into the No. 3 role.
