BCCI Mulls Bringing Back Kohli-Era Fitness Rules

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering reinstating certain fitness standards from Virat Kohli’s tenure as captain. Following Team India’s inconsistent performances since head coach Gautam Gambhir’s arrival, the board is re-evaluating its approach to player fitness and discipline. The Yo-Yo test, a mandatory fitness evaluation under Kohli’s captaincy, was discontinued to accommodate the players’ grueling travel schedules.

However, according to The Times of India, the BCCI is urging its medical team to revert to these stricter fitness benchmarks for player selection. The board is concerned that leniency has allowed complacency among some players, undermining the team’s overall performance.

Stricter Regulations to Prevent Complacency

The BCCI had previously shifted its focus from rigorous fitness standards to injury prevention, allowing players more flexibility. However, this approach is now under scrutiny. A source revealed that the board believes reintroducing fitness criteria could eliminate complacency and ensure higher physical standards across the team.

“The leniency regarding fitness has been taken lightly by certain players. Reinforcing fitness requirements can help maintain discipline and performance levels,” the source said. The potential return of these regulations underscores the BCCI’s intent to prioritize fitness as a critical factor in team selection and success.

Tightening Travel and Family Rules

In addition to fitness requirements, the BCCI is reportedly planning to regulate players’ travel and family involvement during tours. Officials are concerned that allowing families to accompany players, particularly on overseas assignments, might be affecting focus and performance. To address this, the board is set to limit the presence of family members during tours.

Another major change includes enforcing a mandatory travel rule for all players to move with the team, a response to some players choosing to travel independently in recent years. These measures aim to improve team cohesion and discipline, ensuring that off-field factors do not disrupt the players’ performance on the international stage.

The BCCI’s renewed focus on fitness, discipline, and team unity reflects its commitment to reversing the team’s recent slump and restoring its competitive edge.
