The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly mulling over sending Team India to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup. As per ICC’s Future Tours Program, the Pakistan Cricket Board will be hosting the Asia Cup next year, which will take place in an ODI format. India’s participation in the tournament hangs in balance, given strained diplomatic ties with the hosts.

According to a report in the Cricbuzz, the BCCI has kept the options open for India’s participation. However, a final decision will only be taken following the government’s nod. On Thursday, before the Annual General Meeting on October 18, BCCI circulated a note among the state associations, listing India’s engagements in next year’s multilateral events.

The 2023 Asia Cup (Men’s) was also listed in the note along with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, South Africa, ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup, South Africa, and the ICC Cricket World Cup, India, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Participation is subject to the clearance of the Government of India: BCCI official

Going by the AGM note, the BCCI seems open to playing in the Asia Cup in Pakistan. However, they are reluctant to take a final decision about India’s participation in the  2023 Asia Cup. A BCCI official stated as quoted by Cricbuzz, that the final decision lies with the Government of India.

“It will be subject to the clearance of the Government of India as always,” said the BCCI official to Cricbuzz.

The Indian team last visited Pakistan for the 2008 Asia Cup. They ended up as the runner-up, losing to Sri Lanka in the finals. Before that, the Rahul Dravid-led Indian team played three tests and five ODIs in Pakistan in 2005-06. India-Pakistan last played a bilateral series against each other in 2012-13 when Pakistan toured India. The two teams played three T20Is and as many ODIs.
