In a significant shakeup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly dismissed assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, fielding coach T Dilip, and physical trainer Soham Desai following an internal inquiry into media leaks during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Although Nayar had only recently joined the national side eight months ago, his removal comes as part of BCCI’s response to India’s underwhelming Test performance and alleged dressing room breaches.
Despite India winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, their 3-1 series loss to Australia raised concerns, especially after inside information surfaced in the media, suggesting possible leaks from within the coaching unit. Captain Rohit Sharma, who missed the final Test due to poor form, acknowledged the upcoming series against England as a critical test for the team.
Coaching Reshuffle, Changes and Replacements
The coaching reshuffle has led to several replacements within the team’s support staff. While Gautam Gambhir retains his position as head coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, who was previously the assistant coach and part of the triumphant Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2024 campaign, is expected to step into the role of fielding coach.
Additionally, former KKR physical trainer Adrian le Roux is set to take over from Soham Desai. Notably, the BCCI does not plan to bring in new faces for all the vacated roles, as Sitanshu Kotak has already been appointed the team’s batting coach. These changes come in the wake of BCCI’s recent policy to replace support staff who have served for over three years, further signaling a transition phase for the team’s backroom setup.
Ongoing Investigation and Upcoming Challenges
While the exact individual responsible for the media leaks has not been identified, suspicions arose during the Border-Gavaskar series when confidential dressing room matters became public. A member of the team management reportedly raised the issue in a review meeting, prompting the BCCI’s investigation.
T Dilip, who had been fielding coach since Rahul Dravid’s tenure, and Desai, both part of the previous setup, were also affected by the directive to refresh the support staff. India is now gearing up for the five-match Test series against England post-IPL 2025, a series that captain Rohit Sharma believes will be a good challenge. Meanwhile, the team will also tour Bangladesh for an ODI and T20I series, with matches set to be played in Mirpur and Chattogram.
