Will Suryakumar Yadav remain India’s T20I captain? As per a PTI report quoting a senior BCCI source, his captaincy future is likely to be influenced largely by head coach Gautam Gambhir, with the selection committee reportedly not fully convinced of his place in the side purely as a batter.
“Initially, the selectors thought that the IPL would help Suryakumar regain form like the last edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely, there hasn’t been any technical course correction in his game. Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths, and he has no answer. Selectors don’t see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.
Meanwhile, discussions within Indian cricket circles have already begun around potential successors. Shreyas Iyer continues to be seen as a strong candidate, known for his tactical awareness and assertive leadership style, although questions remain over how smoothly he would work alongside Gautam Gambhir.
Iyer’s IPL 2024 Disappointment Recalled as Gill Strengthens Captaincy Case
Sources within the system also recall Iyer’s subdued disappointment during Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 triumph, which was largely credited to Gambhir in his role as mentor. On the other hand, Shubman Gill has further strengthened his case, enjoying another outstanding IPL season and leading Gujarat Titans with notable confidence and control.
Gill was initially considered by Agarkar and the selection group as a long-term all-format captaincy option, but a dip in form ahead of the T20 World Cup eventually derailed those plans. If Suryakumar Yadav steps away, Gill’s return to the T20 setup could come back into consideration, though it would also bring its own set of challenges.
The team management could potentially see Gill opening the innings, with Sanju Samson batting at No. 3 and Ishan Kishan fitting in at No. 4. However, the emergence of teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is reportedly being fast-tracked with an eye on the 2028 Olympics, adds a new and intriguing layer to the leadership discussion.
Meanwhile, Tilak Varma has also been steadily gaining attention, with his name increasingly being discussed in key cricketing circles.
“Don’t rule out Tilak if Surya is sacked. There’s a reason that Tilak has been made captain for the tri-nation A series where selectors would get to see his leadership skills,” the source added.
At present, Indian cricket finds itself at a crossroads where form, future planning, and internal dynamics are all intersecting. Amid the ongoing discussions, statistics, and succession debates, one key reality stands out—Suryakumar’s future could ultimately hinge on whether Gautam Gambhir continues to back him for one more series.
