Facing mounting concerns over hazardous air quality in the national capital, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to shift the knockout matches of its men’s Under-23 one-day tournament from Delhi to Mumbai.

According to reports, elevated pollution levels in the Delhi region prompted the cricketing body to approach the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and request that the association step in to host the finals.  The games, originally earmarked for venues in Delhi, are now set to be held from November 25 to December 1 under the MCA’s oversight.

Health concerns and environmental trigger

The move comes amid forecasts that Delhi’s air quality is likely to deteriorate further, oscillating between “very poor” and “severe” categories, thereby raising serious health risks for players, officials and spectators alike.

According to sources, the BCCI’s decision was influenced by these environmental conditions and the need to ensure a safe playing environment, rather than persisting with matches under potentially hazardous skies. Previous instances of smog‐related disruptions in Delhi also weighed in; earlier this year the BCCI had moved an international Test from Delhi in light of pollution concerns.

Implications and logistics

With the host city now changed, the MCA has been asked to rapidly make the necessary arrangements to accommodate the knockout stage fixtures. The shift underscores the increasing influence of environmental factors on sports scheduling in India.

The BCCI’s move is not simply logistical, but also symbolic — it sends a signal that player welfare and environmental safety are now key considerations when deciding venues. For Delhi, this is a reminder that acute air pollution can affect high‐profile events, prompting authorities and sports bodies to reassess venue suitability in short timeframes.
