During Day 4 of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s, a moment of intense sledging caught everyone’s attention. England’s captain Ben Stokes, known for his fiery on-field presence, took a direct dig at Indian skipper Shubman Gill.
As Gill walked out to bat during India’s second innings, Stokes was heard saying, “600 runs and he’s done for the series,” suggesting sarcastically that Gill had already scored enough and had nothing more to contribute. This pointed remark highlighted the psychological tactics England was employing in a high-stakes game.
Gill’s Stellar Form Meets a Sudden Halt
Shubman Gill entered the third Test in outstanding form, having scored a remarkable 585 runs in the first two Tests of the series, with innings of 269, 161, and 147. His batting had been one of the biggest challenges for the English bowling attack. However, on this occasion, the young Indian captain couldn’t live up to his previous heroics.
Chasing a target of 193 in the final innings, India lost early wickets, and Gill came in at a crucial juncture. Unfortunately for India, he managed to score only six runs before being trapped LBW by English pacer Brydon Carse after facing just nine deliveries.
England’s Mind Games Pay Off
The verbal jab from Stokes appeared to be a strategic move to rattle Gill’s composure at the crease. And it worked. Gill, who had been nearly unstoppable earlier in the series, seemed unsettled during his short stay at the crease.
The psychological pressure coupled with disciplined English bowling proved too much, and his early dismissal was a big blow to India’s chase. Stokes’ words, meant to belittle Gill’s dominance, found a cruel irony as Gill fell for a single-digit score soon after. This sledging moment not only fired up the English camp but also shifted momentum in their favor at a crucial point in the match.
