When fast bowler Mohammed Siraj first received the call telling him he had been selected for the T20 World Cup 2026, he could hardly believe it was real. India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, rang him to share the news that he was being drafted into the squad as a late replacement for the injured Harshit Rana—only days before India’s tournament opener against the USA.
Siraj’s reaction was one of total disbelief. In his typical candid style, he told the captain, “Bhai mazaak mat karo kyon ki yeh to hone wala hai nahi” (“Brother, don’t joke — this isn’t going to happen”), because he assumed Surya was playing a prank on him. It wasn’t until India selector Pragyan Ojha also called with the same message that the reality set in that he was truly being added to the squad.
At the time of the call, Siraj was fully prepared to head abroad; his flight tickets to Spain were already booked so he could watch a La Liga match. In addition to his football plans, he had also factored in his own personal commitments around Ramadan, making the sudden switch to international duty even more surreal.
Rapid Change of Plans
Siraj’s life shifted dramatically in the span of a couple of days. Almost immediately after the confirmation of his World Cup inclusion, he cancelled his plans and flew to Mumbai to link up with the Indian team. His acceptance of the situation reflected both surprise and gratitude, acknowledging that sometimes opportunities come in unexpected ways.
In a post-match presentation following India’s opening win, Siraj reflected on the sudden turn of events, saying that everything that happens is part of a bigger plan and beyond one’s control. “Whatever the almighty has written, no one can change that,” he remarked, embracing the twist of fate that transformed his February itinerary.
Despite being absent from India’s original World Cup plans and not having featured in T20 Internationals for some time, Siraj stayed committed to his craft, working hard in domestic cricket and staying ready for any call from the national side. His transformation from spectator to national team player within a short window highlighted his resilience and readiness.
From Doubt to Impact
Once in the squad, Siraj made an immediate contribution, playing in India’s first match of the tournament against the United States. His presence bolstered the bowling attack and demonstrated that, despite his initial doubts and surprise, he was prepared to deliver when called upon.
Siraj later admitted that being on that flight to Mumbai felt almost dreamlike because he had convinced himself he would not be part of the World Cup squad—especially after being out of the T20I setup for an extended period. But his experience proved that persistence, preparation, and an open mindset can turn even unforeseen circumstances into defining moments on the cricketing stage.
