The Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) have always been known for their innovative approach to making cricket more engaging for spectators. Ahead of the 2025–26 season, Cricket Australia has introduced a new fan-friendly rule inspired by baseball — the “Keep the Ball” initiative. Under this rule, spectators who catch or retrieve a ball that lands in the stands during play will now be allowed to keep it as a souvenir.
This move mirrors baseball’s long-standing tradition where fans get to retain balls hit into the crowd. In BBL and WBBL, however, the rule will initially apply only during the first over of each innings. Regardless of whether the ball crosses the boundary on the full for a six or bounces over the rope, fans will still be permitted to take it home. The intention behind this initiative is to strengthen the bond between players and supporters, adding an extra layer of excitement and interaction to the live match experience.
A Step Towards Fan-Centric Innovation
Alistair Dobson, the Executive General Manager of the Big Bash Leagues, described the move as a reflection of the league’s continued focus on fan engagement. “Player connection drives the Big Bash Leagues, and this initiative further demonstrates our commitment to delivering fan-focused innovation,” he said. Dobson also credited Westpac, a key partner, for collaborating with Cricket Australia to bring the concept to life. He emphasized that such initiatives are designed to make spectators feel like a vital part of the matchday atmosphere, helping the league stand out as one of the most audience-oriented cricket tournaments in the world.
This approach follows BBL’s tradition of introducing exciting new elements, such as power surges, substitute players, and colorful fan interactions, which have redefined T20 cricket presentation globally.
Season Schedule and Excitement Ahead
The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will kick off the upcoming season on November 9, 2025, with the opening match between Brisbane Heat Women and Melbourne Renegades Women at Allan Border Field, Brisbane. The women’s final is scheduled for December 13, 2025. The Men’s Big Bash League (BBL) will follow immediately, beginning on December 14, 2025, with defending champions Perth Scorchers facing Sydney Sixers at Optus Stadium, Perth. The men’s final is set for January 25, 2026.
With the “Keep the Ball” rule and an exciting fixture lineup, the 2025–26 BBL season promises to deliver both thrilling cricket and unforgettable fan experiences.
