Ahead of the first ODI against Australia in Perth, India’s new ODI captain Shubman Gill shared insights into his relationship with senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This series marks the first time Rohit and Kohli will play under Gill’s leadership, as both return to international action after the ICC Champions Trophy Final earlier this year. Despite the new leadership dynamic, Gill emphasised that nothing has changed in their camaraderie or mutual respect. He made it clear that the captaincy shift hasn’t affected his bond with either of the senior cricketers.
He said :
“Whatever the narrative might be, there has been no such thing between us. It is just like old times. He is very helpful, and he always shares his experiences. I have been asking him for his suggestions. I asked him, ‘What would you have done on this wicket if you were the captain?’ I like to pick the brains of other players,” Gill told reporters in Perth. He further added, “I have a good equation with both Virat and Rohit bhai. I always take their advice, and they are not hesitant when it comes to giving their take.”
Learning From Legends And Growing As A Leader
The 25-year-old skipper, who has already impressed with his leadership in Test cricket, acknowledged that captaining alongside such experienced players presents an invaluable learning opportunity. Shubman Gill expressed his eagerness to continue learning from Rohit and Kohli during the series.
“I am sure there would be so many moments in this series where I would be able to learn from them. If I get in a difficult position, I wouldn’t shy away from taking advice from them,” he said. This humble and open-minded attitude has defined Gill’s approach since his early days, as he continues to draw inspiration from the players he once idolised. His willingness to seek guidance from those who have led India before him reflects his maturity and commitment to building a cohesive, forward-thinking team culture.
Carrying Forward The Legacy Of Indian Greats
Gill also recognised the immense responsibility that comes with leading a team that has been previously captained by legends like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. He admitted that following in their footsteps is both an honour and a challenge. “Definitely, very exciting. Big shoes for me to fill in to carry forward the legacy of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. So many experiences and so many learnings I have had,” said Gill.
He went on to add, “I have had numerous conversations with both Rohit and Virat on how to take the team forward and what kind of culture they want for the Indian cricket team. I think those learnings and experiences would help our team going forward.” With such guidance and his calm composure, Gill looks ready to embrace his new chapter as India’s ODI captain
