“Bumrah Bhai Doesn’t Worry About Outside Opinion” – Mohammed Siraj

Jasprit Bumrah has been at the centre of workload management discussions in Indian cricket, often facing scrutiny for his playing schedule. Despite playing the first Test against the West Indies, questions arose about the decision, as many believed it was an opportunity to rest him during a relatively easy home series. Contradictorily, Bumrah was later rested for the ODI series against Australia, which puzzled fans even more.

This inconsistency sparked debates, especially with the T20 World Cup scheduled next year, where Bumrah’s presence will be crucial. A similar situation unfolded in England, where he played three of the five Tests but missed key matches at Edgbaston and The Oval. Ironically, India won both Tests he missed, leading to criticism over his absence in the series decider.

However, teammate Mohammed Siraj stepped up in his defence, insisting that Bumrah’s decisions are driven by medical advice and long-term priorities.

Siraj explained, “Bumrah bhai doesn’t worry about outside opinion. He had a serious back injury and a big surgery. Had he bowled in that match, one can’t say whether he would have bowled again or not, if he had broken down. It’s that serious.”

He added: “That injury is very sensitive. His bowling action is very difficult. He is such an important bowler for India and his availability is so important – from Asia Cup to next year’s World Cup and so on. Indian fans should understand that he is the backbone of the team and be rest assured that whenever possible, he will definitely play. Jassi bhai took the perfect decision.”

Siraj’s Rise in Bumrah’s Absence

With Bumrah being managed carefully to avoid aggravating his back injury, Mohammed Siraj had to shoulder added responsibility. The England series, named the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, became a defining moment in Siraj’s career.

Having taken 20 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and being second only to Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj stepped up as India’s lead fast bowler when Bumrah was rested. At Birmingham, he delivered a standout performance with a six-wicket haul and later claimed another five-for in London, helping India secure a narrow 7-run victory.

Determination and Mindset

Siraj revealed that his motivation was at its peak during the series, as he was determined to make a mark. “When I landed in England, my aim was to become the highest wicket-taker there. That was my zone. During the whole series, I was mentally strong – I wanted to be 100 per cent fit, 100 per cent available, and play all five matches.”

He further added: “My rhythm was also very good when I played the practice matches. When I found out that Jassi bhai was not going to play all the matches, since I was the second senior fast bowler in the team, I wanted to give my 100 per cent.”

Siraj’s mindset and performances demonstrated India’s bench strength and highlighted the importance of strategic workload management for long-term success.
