Former AB de Villiers, who represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru and South Africa, felt that India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah also deserved recognition in the race for the Player of the Tournament award at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. However, with India lifting the trophy, opener Sanju Samson ultimately claimed the prestigious individual honour.
The right-handed batter delivered outstanding performances in the knockout stage, becoming one of the few players to score half-centuries in both the semifinal and final against England national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team.
Samson also produced a sensational unbeaten 97 off 50 balls in a must-win virtual quarterfinal clash against the West Indies cricket team. Meanwhile, Bumrah finished the tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming 14 wickets at an impressive average of 12.42 and maintaining an economy rate of 6.21.
Speaking about the Player of the Tournament debate on his YouTube channel, De Villiers said:
“It was a really close call between Sanju Samson and Bumrah. Bumrah was the top wicket-taker, and so he was pushing for the Player of the Tournament. But to me, there were pivotal moments and overs that he bowled that I felt like maybe he deserved more of a mention. It should have been closer.”
“Bumrah delivered insane overs in the semifinal and final” – AB de Villiers
AB de Villiers lauded Jasprit Bumrah for delivering under pressure on batting-friendly surfaces during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The star pacer produced one of his most impactful spells in India’s seven-run semifinal victory over England national cricket team.
In a run-fest where both sides crossed the 240-run mark, Bumrah stood out with an economical spell, giving away just 33 runs. His crucial 16th and 18th overs proved decisive, conceding only 14 runs at a stage when England still required 69 runs from the final 30 balls.
“It’s not easy to bowl as a fast bowler in India unless you are a Jasprit Bumrah. Even him, he was expensive in a couple of his overs during the tournament. But when it mattered most in the semifinal and final, he bowled insane overs. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“He is hittable, but when it matters, there is a different gear this guy hits, and he goes to a different planet. An incredible performer and an asset to cricket in India,” said De Villiers (via the aforementioned source).
