The Big Bash League is set to break new ground in its 16th season, with Chennai chosen to stage the competition’s first match outside Australia.
Melbourne Renegades will take on defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12 in the tournament opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:40 PM IST, shortly after the conclusion of the fourth day’s play in the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth.
The landmark fixture was formally announced at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both governments have supported the initiative, viewing the match as another way to deepen the relationship between Australia and India through their shared passion for cricket.
The Chennai clash will therefore carry significance beyond the opening points of the season, representing an important step in the BBL’s international expansion.
Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said, “Our sport has such an authentic connection in India. This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments and shows that cricket is a connector for both our countries, and that both the Australian and Indian governments see that and want to be part of it.”
“We’re hugely excited by the opportunity and we expect the match will be the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport.”
Cricket Australia believes staging a Big Bash League match in India could significantly expand the tournament’s reach in one of the world’s largest cricketing markets. Even though only one fixture is being played outside Australia, officials see it as a major opportunity to boost the league’s popularity, increase television audiences and strengthen the global profile of both the BBL and its franchises.
The timing of the move is particularly noteworthy. Cricket Australia has been exploring the possibility of bringing private investment into BBL clubs, and the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers are expected to be among the first franchises considered if an ownership framework is approved. Any such model would require the backing of Cricket Australia, the six state associations and the Australian Cricketers’ Association.
Chennai was selected as the venue following discussions involving the BCCI and Australian officials, including Australian Consul-General Silai Zaki. Earlier this year, representatives from Cricket Australia and the BBL travelled to the city to inspect the MA Chidambaram Stadium and assess logistical arrangements. During the visit, the delegation also met BCCI President Mithun Manhas and acting CEO Hemang Amin on the sidelines of the IPL fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The iconic venue is no stranger to Australian cricket. It was where Australia began their victorious 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup campaign, suffering an opening defeat to India before recovering to claim the title later in the tournament. Chepauk is also due to stage the second Test of next year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy, further strengthening its status as a key international venue.
According to BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson, every one of the league’s eight clubs expressed interest in being part of this landmark fixture. The Melbourne Renegades ultimately secured hosting rights because their revised home schedule provided greater flexibility after shifting their men’s home matches from Marvel Stadium to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
That transition brings to an end a 15-season association with Marvel Stadium, which had been the Renegades’ home since the inaugural BBL campaign in 2011-12. During the upcoming season, the club will play three matches at the MCG, including two home fixtures—one of which will be the highly anticipated Melbourne derby—and an away encounter against the Melbourne Stars.
“Last season’s Melbourne derby attracted more than 68,000 fans to the MCG and we’re excited by the opportunity to create more occasions like that for fans, albeit with the ground turned red,” new Renegades general manager Max Abbott said in a statement.
“(Marvel Stadium) has been a huge part of the Renegades’ DNA, providing our home for the past 15 years and hosting so many memorable moments. It’s a world-class venue and will always hold a special place in the club’s journey,” Max Abbott concluded.
